Question 1

What size is a standard hand towel?

Accepted Answer

Most hand towels measure about 16 x 28 to 16 x 30 inches (41 x 71 to 41 x 76 cm), though some run up to 18 x 30 inches. That's big enough to dry both hands and fold neatly over a ring or bar. Fingertip or guest towels are smaller, around 11 x 18 inches, and washcloths are about 13 inches square.

Question 2

What is a good GSM for hand towels?

Accepted Answer

For most bathrooms, 450 to 600 GSM balances absorbency and drying time. In a small, windowless or steamy bathroom, 400 to 500 GSM dries faster between uses. Plush towels of 600 to 800 GSM feel luxurious but can stay damp all day without good airflow. Weave matters too: waffle and linen towels are lighter, yet still absorb well.

Question 3

How often should you change hand towels?

Accepted Answer

Every two to three days is a good routine for a household hand towel. Change it daily when someone is sick, when guests are using it, or when the towel doesn't dry between uses. Keep two or three per sink so a fresh one is always ready, and wash any towel that smells musty right away rather than waiting for laundry day.

Question 4

Why don't my new towels absorb water?

Accepted Answer

New towels often carry finishing softeners or silicones that make them feel soft in the store but repel water. Wash them two or three times before regular use, with normal detergent and no fabric softener. If older towels stop absorbing, softener or detergent buildup is usually the cause: use less detergent and add an occasional rinse with white vinegar.

Question 5

Why do my hand towels smell musty after washing?

Accepted Answer

The smell comes from towels that stay damp too long, whether on the rack, in the hamper or in the washer after the cycle ends. Wash them in the warmest water the care label allows, use less detergent, and add a white vinegar rinse now and then. Dry them fully and promptly, and switch to a lighter weight if they never dry on the rack.

Question 6

Is Egyptian or Turkish cotton better for hand towels?

Accepted Answer

Both are long-staple cottons that make soft, durable towels with little lint. Egyptian cotton is usually woven as plush terry, so it absorbs more but dries more slowly. Turkish cotton towels typically have flatter loops, so they feel lighter and dry faster. In a small, humid bathroom, Turkish cotton is often the more practical choice.
